Dynamics of stellar disc tilting from satellite mergers

چکیده
ABSTRACT The Milky Way’s stellar disc can tilt in response to torques that result from infalling satellite galaxies and their associated tidal debris. In this work, we explore the dynamics of tilting by running N-body simulations mergers an isolated, isotropic Way-like host galaxy, varying over virial mass, initial position, orbit. We develop validate a first-principles understanding govern how galaxy’s responds satellite’s dark matter (DM) find degree be large for cosmologically motivated merger histories. particular, our results suggest Galactic may still Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, one most significant recent history. These findings have implications terrestrial direct detection experiments as changes relative location Sun with respect DM substructure left behind merging galaxy.

“Fundamental-Plane”-Like Relations From Collisionless Stellar Dynamics: A Comparison of Mergers and Collapses
We present a new set of dissipationless N-body simulations aiming to better understand the pure dynamical aspects of the “Fundamental Plane” (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We have extended our previous hierarchical merger scheme by considering the Hernquist profile for the initial galaxy model. Two-component Hernquist galaxy models were also used to study the effect of massive dark halos on the e...
متن کاملMixing in massive stellar mergers
The early evolution of dense star clusters is possibly dominated by close interactions between stars, and physical collisions between stars may occur quite frequently. Simulating a stellar collision event can be an intensive numerical task, as detailed calculations of this process require hydrodynamic simulations in three dimensions. We present a computationally inexpensive method in which we a...
متن کاملMergers of accreting stellar-mass black holes
We present post-Newtonian N -body simulations on mergers of accreting stellarmass black holes (BHs), where such general relativistic effects as the pericentre shift and gravitational wave emission are taken into consideration. To elucidate the key physics that regulates mergers of BHs, the dynamical friction and the mass accretion by ambient gas are incorporated. We consider a system composed o...
متن کاملAntitruncated Stellar Disks via Minor Mergers
We use hydrodynamic simulations of minor mergers of galaxies to investigate the nature of surface brightness excesses at large radii observed in some spiral galaxies: antitruncated stellar disks. We find that this process can produce the antitruncation via two competing effects: (1) merger-driven gas inflows that concentrate mass in the center of the primary galaxy and contract its inner densit...
متن کاملDynamics of Mergers & Remnants
This review focus on some issues which seem relevant to recent discussions: (1) how halo structure influences tail length, (2) the fate of power-law density cusps, (3) the results of unequal-mass disk galaxy mergers, and (4) the behavior of hot and cold gas in merging disk galaxies. 1. Halos & Tail Length The tails of interacting disk galaxies were lucidly explained by Toomre & Toomre (1972). B...
